GRADE 11 CLASSES

TGJ3M

Welcome to CommTech!

TGV3M

This area will list what the every day expectations are for the Grade 11 Video Course

February 03 - Welcome back to classes!!

General Course expectations

School Event Expectations

Redwalk Expectations

Ball Hockey Expectations

Keep in mind that some of the deadlines will have to be fluid to accommodate the above expectations.

Monday, April 6th - And so we begin!

I have kept all of the general resources (mental health, fun and educational collections) on the Home page so you can still reference them.

I hope each and every one of you are doing well during these difficult times. If you don't understand something, or if you are simply bored, don't hesitate to contact me!

So, first thing, each of you should have received an email in your school account that provides you with free access to the Adobe Creative Cloud for the remainder of the semester.

This was no easy thing to arrange, but, some of your machines may be too old or slow to handle the software since it's pretty demanding on RAM and Graphics.

IF you can get Creative Cloud to work, please email me.

Creative Cloud has the newest version of Adobe Premiere Pro in it for you to edit Video during this time.

IF you can't get it to work and you have either MovieMaker or iMovie on your machine at home, then feel free to make use of this.

IF you have a camera of any sort at home and are able to use it, just let me know when you email me regarding Creative Cloud. Otherwise, I am modifying all expectations so that you can use your phone/gopro/point and shoot or any other device to take videos.

I will expect the following:

Your videos will be edited, using one version of software or another. Your videos will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Composition, Head Room, Nose Room and any camera movements or shot types you can do!!. Lastly, I really hope you have some fun with these assignments!!

For each course, we are expected to provide you with 3 hours of work. You can complete the work at any time of the day, in any order you want to, but you need to submit your completed work no later than end of the day on the Friday (so this week will be Friday April 10th)

I can't stress enough that your safety and mental health are the main concern during this time. Some assignments may ask for you to go outside to take footage, or to record other people, but IN NO WAY do I want you to do something that will put yourself at risk. Keep social distancing in mind, only go out on your own property and only take photos of the people/animals  that you live with. If at any time, you or your parents do not feel comfortable with you being outdoors, then please modify the assignment for something inside.

Your first assignment...

This week you will have a 2 part assignment.

Part 1

You will do 2 small journals/vlogs using Video as the media format. You don't have to upload your video to a website, you can simply email them or share them with me.

These are very informal in nature, but I do expect to have them edited so that dead air and dead space has been removed from your submission.

Each one should be approx. 1 min. in length and the content is just you telling me what you have been doing! You can have other things that you will feature, your pet, your property, a game, a zoom, a movie... anything! Think of it like in the movie "The Martian" where Matt Damon would record small videos to check in and update earth of his progress.

Have one Vlog in a "Talking Head" format, and another in a "Follow Me Around" format.

https://convertkit.com/how-to-vlog

Keep the content informal and share with me what you are doing, how you are, how you have been spending your time! You are welcome to feature the other people you live with, as long as they are fine with it.

Part 2

For the second part of this assignment, I want you to plan and shoot a max. 30 second video where you share "Why You Miss CHSS"!

All of us are missing school, even if we don't want to admit it :) For this assignment, be as creative as possible and share what it is you are missing about our school!!

Again, edit this to the best of your ability.

Upload Part 1 and Part 2 into a folder on your Google Drive, and share this with me by the end of day Friday!

It will be great to see what all of you have been up to!

April 15th Work

Since there was a lot of confusion for the first week, and the Easter weekend, we will stick with something easy this week!

Read the following Chapter: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1hohywX_l3gzg9n-1SQLT4F2wVdY0YHhV

It is all about the Production Process in filmmaking.

The curriculum expectations are listed at the beginning of the Chapter.

There are also Review Questions at the end of the Chapter.

  1. Thoroughly read the Chapter and then answer the Review Questions.

  2. There are 7 Questions, answer them all.

  3. Your answers should always follow the Literacy Guidelines.

  • This means your answer will repeat some of the question so that it is clear what question you are answering.

  • Your answers will be free of spelling mistakes, in full sentence format and have proper punctuation.

The written (typed) parts of the questions can be done in Google Docs.

The drawings can be done on paper and then you can take a picture of the drawing and email it to me at:

jacqui.vercruyssen@ed.amdsb.ca

So, to summarize: By the end of the day on Friday April 17th, you will need to share with me your written (typed) answers and any images of the drawings you completed.

If you have any questions at all, let me know!

Stay safe and healthy!

April 22-24 Work

Not sure how I missed putting an assignment up for you guys, but I definitely did!! So sorry for the confusion. I will keep this one small since it is my error and should be due on Friday by the end of the day!

Today we will combine a literacy activity with film! We will modify things to make it work for us, but the general idea will be the same.

First, you will need to write yourself a news story.

Here is a guideline for writing a news report for the Literacy Test

For this particular one, you will use the massive amounts of information that is out there for Covid 19.  Do your research so that the report you will give is as accurate as possible. There are many sources of ACCURATE information out there such as CP24, CNN and so many more. You do need to have a few quotes in a news report, and for this assignment you could interview a guest (such as a sibling or a parent) that could provide their opinion on the situation.

You can do an update on Covid - provide new numbers, discuss how things have changed provincially and globally.

You could focus on one aspect like how school is closed and how that has afffected students.

You could focus on the toilet paper shortage :) or how people have hoarded items.

You could even talk about the changes in daily life.

Second, using a screen centre approach and enough headroom you will record yourself giving the news report. Remember that this is a formal approach so you want to make sure that your background is clean and appropriate. There are lots of reporters that are giving their updates from home these days so you can watch how they are doing it and try to mimic that style.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Again, sorry for this oversight!!

April 27- May 1st - Let's Lighten Things Up This Week!!

I know we have all had to spend more time in front of the television lately, so for this week, you will watch a movie (no animations or anime) and create a Google slide to share a Review of that movie.

For your Review, include the following information:

  • A Picture of the Movie

  • Name of the Movie

  • When was the movie released?

  • Who are the Main Characters?

  • What is the Genre of the Movie? (https://www.filmsite.org/genres.html)

  • How would you Rate the Movie out of 5?

  • Did you like the movie - yes or no? And Why??

  • What is the movie about - write a min. of 5 sentences for this one.

  • Write 2 interesting things about this movie.

  • Would you recommend the movie? Why would you? Give specific details.

  • How does the movie make you feel?

So... to summarize...

By the end of the day on Friday May 1st, you need to watch a movie of your choice and then create a Google slide that includes the information that is in point form above.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Assignment for May 4-8th

Can you believe it has been a month since we have moved to this online platform?

So to celebrate we are going to do another check in using the Vlog format you have already done.

Same thing with these 2 vlogs, one will be in a talking head format and the other in a follow me format. Edit these the best you can with whatever you have available to use, upload and share with me :)

Ideas to share would be:

  • How have you adapted to this "new normal"

  • What have you loved, what have you disliked

  • What have you learned

  • Something you did with your family/siblings

  • What is new

  • Have you accomplished something new

  • How have you passed your days

  • Has anything funny happened

Work for May 11-15th

For this week you will be learning about the various jobs on a movie set and finding one that interests you to do a more thorough investigation of.

Surprisingly there are lots of movie jobs here in Canada! The film industry is very active in Toronto.

Use this link: https://www.liveabout.com/what-people-in-movie-credits-actually-do-3966739

to read about the various jobs that are on a movie set, the ones that we see in the credits at the end of a movie.

If the career that you have been interested in isn't on this site, you can use your own websites for this assignment.

Find one that is of interest to you. For the job that is of interest to you, create a google presentation that demonstrates an understanding of the following:

  • What is the career

  • Give a description of what the job role is

  • Why does it interest you

  • What pathway would you have to follow (college, university, apprenticeship, etc) in order to pursue this career

  • Where could you go to school for this

    • locate 2 schools in Canada

    • identify the program you would have to take

    • how much would the tuition be

    • how long is the program

    • identify how post secondary would help you in this career

  • Provide some pictures of this job in action

  • Use the links below to also locate some possible salaries here in Canada for film crew jobs:

  • Are any of the skills transferrable to another career - identify which career

  • Can you find a famous person that has this job - give a brief biography and a pic of them

  • Use a slide to copy and paste the websites you used to find your information

Once you have all the information above organized into a Google Presentation, make sure you have your resources listed and some images to support your information, then share your project with me.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help!!

May 19-22

I hope all of you had a wonderful long weekend!!

For this week, it is a short week, so I want to test your creativity!

For this assignment you have all the creative control. I want each of you to create a 1-2 min. film, using whatever you have available to you (phone, camera, camcorder, ipad, etc.).

The topic is up to you. Some ideas to get your creative concepts started are... a silent film where you focus on nature/lighting/sky/wind etc., a chase scene (chase through the house or the yard or find a park that is open), apocalypse (use this time where things are deserted to create a film that suggests we are in an apocalypse), a film from an animal's perspective (make good use of your loving family pet and try to capture the world from their perspective).

Those are just a few ideas, fell free to use your own.

Edit your creative concept using whatever you have available to you, add some music (even a silent film requires a good use of music) and upload it your google drive and share it with me.

Struggling with technology?

Have questions?

Let me know!!

I am here for you!

May 25 - 29

Hi Everyone!

There are quite a few of you who are a bit behind with your assignments. I would like to give this week for you to catch up.

For those that have everything done and submitted, thank you!! And for doing such a great job, you get to take this week off!!! (From my course at least :) )

If you are one of the people that have fallen behind, use this time wisely to get yourself caught up!

Stay healthy!

As always, if you need help, please let me know!!

June 01 - 05

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all staying healthy and active!

For this week you will be working on a scanned chapter from a textbook. You will read the pages and then answer the 8 Review Questions at the end of it.

I do realize that there have been changes in equipment since the printing of this textbook, but we will do the best with what we have access to right now.

Remember to always use full sentences for your answers and to let me know if you have any questions at all!

You can find the Chapter HERE

The Review Questions are on the last page.

June 15-24

It is so hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the semester!

It feels so strange to not be able to say good bye to each of you in person.

I hope that each of you has a wonderful summer and that you stay safe and healthy!!

For this next assignment you can choose one of the items in the following document:

June Assignment

Let me know if you have any questions.

Complete this last assignment using whatever you have available at home!

Redwalk Expectations for Course

If you CANNOT get it to work, you can download a free trial of Photoshop Elements (same that we use at school). The trial will be good for 30 days.

The link for Photoshop Elements can be found here: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/photoshop-elements-downloads.html

PLEASE EMAIL ME to let me know what version you are able to use ok?

IF you have a camera of any sort at home and are able to use it, just let me know when you email me regarding Photoshop. Otherwise, I am modifying all expectations so that you can use your phone to take the photos.

I will expect the following:

Your photos will be edited, using one version of software or another. Your photos will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Composition.

Some assignments may ask for you to go outside to take photos, or to photograph other people, but IN NO WAY do I want you to do something that will put yourself at risk. Keep social distancing in mind, only go out on your own property and only take photos of the people/animals  that you live with. If at any time, you or your parents do not feel comfortable with you being outdoors, then please modify the assignment for something inside.

Your first assignment...

Photos on a Theme...

For this assignment all of your images will be around the theme of  "Spring".

You will need 10 photos in your collection that will all centre around the theme of "Spring". Keep in mind your Composition guidelines and be as creative as possible with this. You will want to make sure that you demonstrate variety, a range of colours, unique perspective and anything else you can think of!

Always try to push yourself to get past symbols, it is easy to think of symbols that represent "Spring", but try to think of emotions that also come with the season.

IF you would rather not go outside to capture these images, then you could modify the theme to "Easter". Even with the modified theme, the above outline should still apply to your finished images.

If you are looking for some inspiration... check out the links below:

Have some fun with this! Put all 10 photos together in a folder in Google Drive and share the folder with me!

I can't wait to see what you come up with!!

There is no written requirement for this assignment!

In addition to the above assignment, I want you to practice with some online DSLR simulators so that you don't forget how the settings on a camera work.

Share with me 3 images that you take with the simulators, preferably one from each simulator. Include with this assignment, 3-5 sentences where you share with me what you discovered using the simulators.

Exposure Simulator

Practice using the 3 camera simulators and share 3 photos that you took with them as well as 3-5 sentences that share your understanding of how exposure and depth of field work.

Lastly, email me and let me know what software you are able to use.

Have fun!!

Work for the week of April 20 - 24

I hope all of you are holding up and finding ways to cope with this new "normal way of life". I know that it is difficult. If any of you need help or need to talk, don't hesitate ok!!

For this week I thought we could have some fun with our pets!! If you don't have a pet, perhaps there are animals on your farm? Or you see some birds or squirrels on your property.

I know that my quarantine buddy has been my incredible dog! I don't know what I would do without him and many of you likely feel the same with your pet, even if it's a hamster or a fish!!

We have all seen that our pets can be hilarious and come sometimes look like humans. Their facial features can leave a lot to interpretation!!

So...

Do you have a Pet? What about some farm animals? The challenge is to get TWO photos of your pet that looks like your pet could be on the cover of an album!! Imagine they could be the next cover band! Feel free to use props and if your pet is willing... try dressing them up :)

For inspiration, look at this!

Here are some animals that are killing it!!

https://www.boredpanda.com/animals-about-to-drop-album-photos/utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic

If you are looking to take things one step further, you could give your album a name and possibly (depending on your access to technology) put the text on the image to give it a finished look. Try black and white too! Put both your images in your Drive and share them with me!

To summarize... by the end of the day on Friday April 24th, you will need to share with me TWO different and unique images that demonstrate the concept of your pet/farm animal/critter that could seem as though they are going to be on the cover of an album. Remember to edit your images the best you can with what you have!

If you have no access to any kind of animal... then this is the time to ask your siblings and your parents to participate. No, they don't have to dress up as animals... they can be human band members!!

Have some fun, and as always, ask if you have questions or need some help!!

Next Assignment April 27 - May 1st

For this week you will work on Portrait Photography

Here is the lesson I would normally give in class.

Portrait Photography

Portraits have existed for a long time, and were originally only available to the rich. Now people take selfies every day, post them in multiple locations and never think a thing about it.

For this assignment you will need to choose a subject (you will have to ask a sibling or a parent to be your subject).

In a portrait, something about the person should be revealed (do they love cats, hockey, golf, reading, swinging) and how can you incorporate that into your photo?.

Push yourself to make the best use of composition, lighting, different perspective and anything else you can think of to make the image the most interesting.

You will be required to set up, shoot and edit the images the best you can and share them with me a long with a written explanation of what and why you took the photos you did.

You will need to share your TWO best images by May 1st.

If you have questions or need clarification, just let me know!

Work for May 4-8th

Read the article featured here:

Top 10 Reasons for Photography in Marketing

Then apply your knowledge from the Product Photography unit to market a product of your choice. Your submission will include 2 different shots of the product you intend to market as well as a written discussion where you will reflect on a minimum of 3 areas from the article that you feel you accomplished. Tell me how and why you feel that your shots are effective ways to market your product. Make sure that your 2 shots are entirely different and make use of composition. Control your backgrounds, try different perspectives and experiment with lighting!

Work for May 11-15th

What do you want to take photos of? I have been providing ideas/concepts for your images, but maybe there is something you have been wanting to take photos of? Now is your chance! Maybe it’s a car? A shed? The way the light comes in the window? It doesn’t matter, for this week I want you to focus on taking creative and technically sound images that reflect the world that you want to share with me. There is no right or wrong images to take, although they must be school appropriate. In total, you will submit 6 unique images that you have edited as best you can. Control your backgrounds, try different perspectives and experiment with lighting! Remember that each image must be different from the others. If you are still working, you can take photos of your job as well!

Along with your 6 photos, I also want you to give me a brief write up that tells me why you have taken the shots that you have. Give me the background story!

I can't wait to see the wonderful and creative things you come up with!

May 19-22

How is everyone holding up?

I hope you had a fantastic long weekend! I was outside enjoying that sunshine on Saturday for sure! I wasn't a fan of the rain, but I guess we get a bit of everything!

Since we have a short week this week and the weather is supposed to be nice, I thought maybe everyone could head outside for a safe and socially distant walk to do a photography scavenger hunt!! You don't have to go any further than your own neighbourhood. Stroll down a few streets and see how many things you can find!!

If you are uncomfortable with going for a walk, send me a message and I will send you an alternative scavenger hunt.

You can find the Scavenger Hunt HERE

Have some fun! Label your images, upload them to your Google Drive and Share them with me.

Next week will be a bigger assignment, so enjoy some fun this week!!

Need some help?

Looking for some feedback?

Struggling with your technology?

Let me know! I am here for you!
