General Course expectations

School Event Expectations

Redwalk Expectations

Ball Hockey Expectations

Monday, April 6th - And so we begin!

I have kept all of the general resources (mental health, fun and educational collections) on the Home page so you can still reference them.

I hope each and every one of you are doing well during these difficult times. If you don't understand something, or if you are simply bored, don't hesitate to contact me!

So, first thing, each of you should have received an email in your school account that provides you with free access to the Adobe Creative Cloud for the remainder of the semester.

This was no easy thing to arrange, but, some of your machines may be too old or slow to handle the software since it's pretty demanding on RAM and Graphics.

IF you can get Creative Cloud to work, please email me.

Creative Cloud has the newest version of Adobe Premiere Pro in it for you to edit Video during this time.

IF you can't get it to work and you have either MovieMaker or iMovie on your machine at home, then feel free to make use of this.

IF you have a camera of any sort at home and are able to use it, just let me know when you email me regarding Creative Cloud. Otherwise, I am modifying all expectations so that you can use your phone/gopro/point and shoot or any other device to take videos.

I will expect the following:

Your videos will be edited, using one version of software or another. Your videos will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Composition, Head Room, Nose Room and any camera movements or shot types you can do!!. Lastly, I really hope you have some fun with these assignments!!

For each course, we are expected to provide you with 3 hours of work. You can complete the work at any time of the day, in any order you want to, but you need to submit your completed work no later than end of the day on the Friday (so this week will be Friday April 10th)

I can't stress enough that your safety and mental health are the main concern during this time. Some assignments may ask for you to go outside to take footage, or to record other people, but IN NO WAY do I want you to do something that will put yourself at risk. Keep social distancing in mind, only go out on your own property and only take photos of the people/animals  that you live with. If at any time, you or your parents do not feel comfortable with you being outdoors, then please modify the assignment for something inside.

Your first assignment...

This week you will have a 2 part assignment.

Part 1

You will do 2 small journals/vlogs using Video as the media format. You don't have to upload your video to a website, you can simply email them or share them with me.

These are very informal in nature, but I do expect to have them edited so that dead air and dead space has been removed from your submission.

Each one should be approx. 1 min. in length and the content is just you telling me what you have been doing! You can have other things that you will feature, your pet, your property, a game, a zoom, a movie... anything! Think of it like in the movie "The Martian" where Matt Damon would record small videos to check in and update earth of his progress.

Have one Vlog in a "Talking Head" format, and another in a "Follow Me Around" format.

https://convertkit.com/how-to-vlog

Keep the content informal and share with me what you are doing, how you are, how you have been spending your time! You are welcome to feature the other people you live with, as long as they are fine with it.

Part 2

For the second part of this assignment, I want you to plan and shoot a max. 30 second video where you share "Why You Miss CHSS"!

All of us are missing school, even if we don't want to admit it :) For this assignment, be as creative as possible and share what it is you are missing about our school!!

Again, edit this to the best of your ability.

Upload Part 1 and Part 2 into a folder on your Google Drive, and share this with me by the end of day Friday!

It will be great to see what all of you have been up to!

Your work for the week of April 13-17

Feel free to start this whenever you can and make sure to submit it by the end of the day on Friday April 17th.

For this week I am going to have each of you work on something different because each of you have access to different equipment.

Remember that I'm not asking you to do anything that would put you at risk. Make sure you are self isolating, practicing social distancing and everything else.

Nolan, using your GoPro, and the fact that you are working every day, I want you to create a 3 min film that will show the changes you observe on a daily basis due to the extreme measure that have been taken because of COVID 19. Yours will be from a working perspective, day to day life and how it has affected your family. Bring your GoPro to work, get some live action footage of what you do. Get some footage of the drive to work. You can edit on your laptop and add some voice overs. Here is a link to some free audio recording software: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

Alex, using your equipment and ToonBoom, ( I am assuming you still have this software at home?). I want you to make an animation that communicates the changes you have seen/felt in the past few weeks. The length of yours will be dependant on the storyline you choose to go with. If you need help coming up with a story, let me know and we can brainstorm together.

Brandon, since you only have access to your phone , I want you to create a 2 min film that will show the changes you observe on a daily basis due to the extreme measures that have been taken because of COVID 19. Yours will be from a farming perspective. What has changed? Has it been more interesting to be isolated because your on a farm? Better? Worse? Since you have been able to get the Creative Cloud downloaded, I also want you to go to https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/playlist/title_design/the_grid/   and scroll down to find a title text you like and go through that online tutorial to make a title for your farm video. Upload your 2 min. film and your title sequence and share with me.

Cordell, you also only have your phone, what I'd like you to do is create a Documentary style film that will share information about the Virus itself and how it has affected you. I realize that you aren't able to interview anyone in person during this time, but you could do an interview virtually? Just interview your friends and family. Can you download Movie Maker on your laptop? Here is a link to try: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/movie-maker-10-free/9mvfq4lmz6c9?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Here is a link to Audacity as well:https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

What I thought you could do is have some footage of deserted areas with voice overs and put in a few virtual interviews as well. You could even cut some clips from https://www.facebook.com/pg/thestaysh/posts/    to put in as well. Since you know them, I am sure they wouldn't mind you using some of their footage? Since it is just for education.

I think that 3 mins would be more than enough, you let me know your thoughts ok?!

If any of you have any concerns with your assignments, let me know ok!!

Have a wonderful Easter!!

Hey everyone! I am going to give until Tuesday before I assign new work because I haven't received everyone's assignments from last week. I know that last week's films were a bit larger in scope so I will give a few more days.

Stay safe and healthy!!

Work for May 11-15th

This week we are going to work on our Critical Thinking skills.

I want all of you to take a critical look at how the virus has affected the Media Industry. Your answers to the questions are from a personal point of view so there are no wrong answers.

Please read through the links I have put below and answer the questions the best that you can.

Effects of Covid on the Media Industry

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/04/covid-19-media-value/

This article discusses how Covid presents opportunities and challenges for the media industry, identify what the opportunities and challenges are.

Discusses how ads had to be pulled or changed.

https://strategyonline.ca/2020/04/06/dove-shows-the-beautiful-courage-of-frontline-workers/

What was the reason for ads being changed?

What was the reason for ads being pulled?

In the weeks that we have been isolated, how have ads changed? What have you noticed?

Do you feel that the ad industry responded quickly?

How did Ellen and many others respond to their shows being cancelled due to Covid?

What about the release of Frozen 2? What did Disney do?

https://www.newsweek.com/hollywood-takes-economic-beating-covid-19-1494920

Summarize what this article is about.

How has it effected Netflix and businesses like it?

Why do some sources say that Netflix is “insulated” from the effects of Covid 19?

This list shows how every show, movie, series, etc. has been cancelled… very overwhelming!

Have an awesome week!!

May 19-29

Hi Everyone!'

I hope all of you had a wonderful long and very rainy weekend!!!

For this next assignment, you will have this short week and next week.

You will use your time to create a "Silent Film".

You won't need to worry about dialogue for this film, instead body language and the background music will be key!

The following website has some awesome silent film history to get you thinking:

https://www.octaneseating.com/history-of-silent-movies/

If this genre interests you, feel free to have a look at some classics:

https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/10-silent-movies-sure-to-please-the-skeptics.html/

Movements in a silent film are often exaggerated so that the viewer can more clearly understand what is happening. So a walk will be a bigger walk, a shrug will be bigger, etc. Another key to silent films is the use of music. A lot of silent films actually had a live band playing while the movie played. Surprisingly, there was no talking and that was due to the fact that microphones hadn't been created. Once they were, several people disliked talking films because it took away from their imagination!!

  • So, you will create a silent film to tell a story - a short story - so keep it simple!

  • Ideas could be a chase scene, a comedy, a robbery... or you could do a Hitchcock dramatic or suspenseful concept!

  • You can stick with the time period and convert your film into black and white or keep it in colour.

  • You will add music that is appropriate to your genre - this is a critical step.

  • Use whatever resources and people you have at your disposal.

  • Edit with whatever you can use.

  • Keep your movie between 2 and 5 mins.

  • Upload to your drive, share with my by the 29th of May!!

Want some feedback for your film?

Struggling with technology?

Have questions?

Let me know, I am here for you!

May 25 - 29

Hi Everyone!

There are quite a few of you who are a bit behind with your assignments. I would like to give this week for you to catch up.

For those that have everything done and submitted, thank you!! And for doing such a great job, you get to take this week off!!! (From my course at least :) )

If you are one of the people that have fallen behind, use this time wisely to get yourself caught up!

Stay healthy!

As always, if you need help, please let me know!!

June 01 - 12

I want you all to know how well you have been doing!

I know that this is difficult and that you miss your friends and everything else. You are all doing such a fabulous job with trying to keep up with school and manage this weird and wonderful new "normal". Keep it up guys and gals!!

For this week and next, I want to challenge each of you to create a message of hope through video. You can choose any method you would like to; documentary, animation, silent, cinematic...that is up to you. Use your strengths and your comforts to help you with this one.

Plan, write, shoot and edit a "Message of Hope". You can choose your target audience ; the world, your peers, future generations.

You could also try something very different and piece together snippets from other films or songs to create a sort of mash up message (CRAVE commercials are a good source of inspiration for this).

Keep your message less than 3 mins, If you need longer, that is fine too but under 3 mins is a manageable time frame.

I look forward to seeing your messages!!

Let me know if you have any questions!

June 15 - 24

Hi again!! Hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the school year! Some of you will be leaving the school and I wouldn't even of had a chance to say good bye to you! I hope that you will choose to visit, and I can also see you at Graduation. It has been such a pleasure getting to know all of you. I wish you success!!

For this assignment, I am going to leave it up to each of you. You have all demonstrated incredible troubleshooting skills and perseverance! I am so proud of each of you! For this assignment, do something creative! Show me what's on your mind. Use what you have available to you at home. Look at it as though it is a sort of a final project so give it your best shot!!

As always, I look forward to what you will create.

Let me know if you need any help generating ideas or help with equipment.

If at any time, you or your parents do not feel comfortable with you being outdoors, then please modify the assignment for something inside.

Your first assignment...

Imagine you have been hired as a Stock Photographer...

Which means you are going to create a stock pile of images that another agency will sell on your behalf and you will get royalties every time they get used. Stock photos are a less expensive way for someone to license an image for use for promotion or ads, or anything! Many stock images will feature text on them, they could be used for business cards, a formal presentation, an ad, some promotional items like a T-shirt, the uses are really limitless.

For this imaginary position, the context of your stock images will be "Spring".

You will need 15 photos in your stock pile that will serve a variety of consumer uses, but they will all centre around the theme of "Spring". Keep in mind your Composition guidelines and be as creative as possible with this. You will want to make sure that in your stock pile, there are a few images that would allow for text placement, a few that would appeal to a variety of target audiences/ages, and have a range of colours.

Always try to push yourself to get past symbols, it is easy to think of symbols that represent "Spring", but try to think of emotions that also come with the season.

IF you would rather not go outside to capture these images, then you could modify the theme to "Easter". Even with the modified theme, the above outline should still apply to your finished images.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!!

There is no written requirement for this assignment!

Your work for the week of April 13-17

Feel free to start this whenever you can and make sure to submit it by the end of the day on Friday April 17th.

We are currently living in a time that is unprecedented. No one has ever gone through this before. There are several photographers that have already begun to document these historical times. This is your chance to join in!

One of the units we cover in Photography is Photo Journalism. It is the natural extension of the 5 Frame Story that we start with in Grade 11.

Photo Journalists have a tough job... they take one photo that will be supported with minimal text and will tell a powerful story.

Here are a couple of resources to gain a greater understanding of the role of a Photojournalist:

Your challenge for this week will be to use your photography skills to capture a minimum of two images that tell a compelling story of COVID 19. Remember that I'm not asking you to do anything that would put you at risk. Make sure you are self isolating, practicing social distancing and everything else.

Your 2 images could be of an deserted area, it could be of your experience at the grocery store, of what your Easter looked like this year, signage that is closing off the beaches and the parks... there are many options! These could also be staged emotional shots of the family members you are isolating with.

Most people think that these need to be sad, but they don't!! You can have fun with this. You can take images that show the impact of COVID 19 from a funny perspective, like those people who have gone to the grocery store wearing a TRex costume :)

I have provided you with LOTS of examples below to get your creative side working!!

Make sure that you edit your images using whatever you  have available to you.

Upload both images to Drive and share with me! If you are able to get more images, feel free to share them as well!

Work for the week of April 20 - 24

I hope all of you are holding up and finding ways to cope with this new "normal way of life". I know that it is difficult. If any of you need help or need to talk, don't hesitate ok!!

For this week I thought we could have some fun with our pets!! If you don't have a pet, perhaps there are animals on your farm? Or you see some birds or squirrels on your property.

I know that my quarantine buddy has been my incredible dog! I don't know what I would do without him and many of you likely feel the same with your pet, even if it's a hamster or a fish!!

We have all seen that our pets can be hilarious and come sometimes look like humans. Their facial features can leave a lot to interpretation!!

So...

Do you have a Pet? What about some farm animals? The challenge is to get TWO photos of your pet that looks like your pet could be on the cover of an album!! Imagine they could be the next cover band! Feel free to use props and if your pet is willing... try dressing them up :)

For inspiration, look at this!

Here are some animals that are killing it!!

https://www.boredpanda.com/animals-about-to-drop-album-photos/utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic

If you are looking to take things one step further, you could give your album a name and possibly (depending on your access to technology) put the text on the image to give it a finished look. Try black and white too! Put both your images in your Drive and share them with me!

To summarize... by the end of the day on Friday April 24th, you will need to share with me TWO different and unique images that demonstrate the concept of your pet/farm animal/critter that could seem as though they are going to be on the cover of an album. Remember to edit your images the best you can with what you have!

If you have no access to any kind of animal... then this is the time to ask your siblings and your parents to participate. No, they don't have to dress up as animals... they can be human band members!!

Have some fun, and as always, ask if you have questions or need some help!!

Assignment for April 27 - May 1st

I was hoping to do this when we got back but we will have to move forward with some Food Photography!

Find below the lessons I would give in class:

Food Photography Lesson  - here are the basics to start with

Instagram Food Lesson - you will notice that Instagram food shots are interactive, context is important as well. So when I say interactive, you will notice that the shot goes out of the frame, the entire shot isn't neat and perfect, there may be bits of food on the table, on the edge of the plate, a utensil can be in the middle of eating the food. Instagram is also used for street food, which means context can be important - say for example I am eating a Belgian waffle in Belgium, I would want to showcase the food but somehow incorporate a background item that would let people recognize where I am (context). The food can be staged, or completely natural. Lighting is key because you don't want the food to look gross because it has weird colours. Colours go further because you want to enhance the item so choose a background that has a complimentive colour.

Also remember that Instagram food shots are also to feature the wild and wonderful food that is out there (3 patty burgers, the crazy milkshakes that have all kinds of food attached to them!

For this assignment, the lessons above will get you thinking, and then you can take your understanding further by checking out the links below:

You DO NOT NEED TO SPEND A BUNCH OF MONEY to do this assignment, but what I want you to do is take and edit 3 Instagram worthy shots! Each shot must be unique, try one from each meal? A breakfast, lunch and dinner shot? Or go all out and make the most outrageous stack of pancakes, sundae, burger... you name it! Edit each shot the best that you can and  share with me!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Work for May 4 - 8th

This week we will move to Food Photography, similar to food for magazines. These are more formal shots where the sets are clean and perfect and the entire focus is on the food product. Many of these are thematic, they will have supporting items to complete the look - say it's an icy glass of pop, there will be something to go with it; a person, a food, something. Lots of work goes into these shots, there is an entire industry committed to creating the perfect food shot. These people are known as "Food Stylizers". You can see samples of their work in this lesson:   Food Stylizing Lesson . They use the craziest things to make their shots come to life!

You can read more about this career in the link below:

https://www.format.com/magazine/resources/art/food-stylist-career-guide

Again, you don't need to spend money to do this assignment, you can add some flare to a meal you are already having this week. Add a garnish, stage some great utensils and linens, try some of the food stylizing concepts to enhance the images. Make sure you have lots of good lighting!! The goal again this week will be 3 unique food shots. Along with the images, I want you to to include a write up that tells me about what you were going for in the shot, what weird and wonderful things you tried and what obstacles you had to overcome.

Have fun and let me know if you have any questions!!

Work for May 11-15th

This week is going to be an easy one everyone!! I know many of you are working and finding it difficult to find time to get your work done.

For this week, we are going to stick with the Food Unit but I am going to challenge each of you to create one shot that is on a "Movie Night" Theme, and one that is a "Celebration" Theme. You can decide if you want to do a formal shot, or if you want to do something more in line with Instagram. The only limitation here is your imagination.

I can't wait to see what you will come up with!

May 19-22

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend!!

Mine was pretty good. I definitely took advantage of the beautiful Saturday!

Since we have a short week this week, this assignment will be small and full of creative freedom!

For the past weeks I have been providing you with concepts/ideas/themes for you to take photos of. For this week, I want you to take photos of what interests you. OR, if you have access to Photoshop, you can do a Photoshop creation in place of photos.

In total I will want 2 incredible submissions.

2 Photoshop Creations

OR

2 Photos that take into consideration lighting, composition, creativity and editing

OR

Mix it up and do one of each, if you have access to Photoshop at home :)

Next week will be a big assignment so enjoy the easy one this week :)

Make sure you share you 2 images with me! Keep in mind that you have many options this week for content and creativity!!

Struggling with technology?

Looking for some help or feedback?

Let me know!! I am here for you!

Hi Everyone!! I can hardly believe that I won't see you guys before you head off for post secondary. Makes me so sad!! I hope that when things are better I will see each of you!!

For the next 2 weeks I want you each to try a complex image based off of one of Robyn Cummings early collections. The lesson is below and I will have you just go through it for today and I will post more info. about it tomorrow. This will be a tough one to explain virtually, but I will give it my best shot!

Robyn Cummings lesson.

Have a look at the lesson today and try to digest what you are seeing and then I will post more tomorrow ok!!

Ok... here it goes!! How to explain a difficult concept? Well two actually! I will do my best!

So Robyn Cummings is an incredible Canadian Photographer that I had the pleasure of attending one of her talks. She is very passionate and creative. I have showcased her older work because I find her newer work is more difficult to grasp. She is a graduate of Ryerson University.

She is very passionate about patterns, colour and details. When she attended school she actually transformed her second bedroom into mini sets for her photography. She put a lot of work into each shot.

You will notice the first 3 slides are based on "housekeeping made simple" which was a series that was meant to show the other side to the perfect house wife. The ironing shot - the shirt is burnt, she is smoking, her nylons aren't perfect. But also pay attention to the patterns and colours in every part of the image.

Next shot, the bagged lunches are made but they are gross, she is caring for the dog, but secretly poisoning it. Again, the colours and the patterns. Notice no use of facial expressions, in fact there are no head shots.

Slide 4 she has the child tied to the bed (rope even matches her sweater) this is how she is perfect mother, and it is implied that she killed the husband and is cleaning it up.

The next few slides is another collection meant to show what is really "behind" things. The reality behind grieving (the fact that we filter through a million images), what it is like to be a "handy man" (it's super hard), the perfect family (that isn't) and what it's truly like to be a journalist and the last one in that series is dressing up to be the perfect - child, girl, woman, just like paper dolls.

The last series in this lesson is the "Bound Series" and it implies that we are all bound by something - shoes? music? movies? games? nail polish? sunglasses? It really doesn't matter, it is that one thing that we enjoy more than others. You possibly collect them, or pride yourself in the fact that you have them. This series has two images, one where the objects are placed around the person in a way that makes them look overwhelmed or overpowered by them. Notice that the facial expression is vacant - not asking for understanding or help, just there.

The second image has the same objects arranged neatly and nicely, demonstrating that the objects are just ordinary on their own - a collection of sorts. Notice the colours and the patterns.

For this assignment, you will choose from one of the series and create your own piece. This is complicated which is why I gave you 2 weeks to accomplish it. If you need clarification, I am happy to walk you through it over the phone.

Let me know if you need help!!

June 15-24

Hi again!! Hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the school year! Some of you will be leaving the school and I wouldn't even of had a chance to say good bye to you! I hope that you will choose to visit, and I can also see you at Graduation. It has been such a pleasure getting to know all of you. I wish you success!!

A Reflection of Character Through Photography

• Ever hear the phrase “A Picture Can Say a Million Words”? Here is your chance to do just that.
• Our school strongly believes in the 10 Character Traits and it is your challenge to capture those in pictures.
• You will also be required to locate a suitable quote online that represents that character trait. Place the quote
somewhere on the image (be conscious of your placement) to create a complete design. Your font choice, colour
and size are just as important as your image.
• For inspiration, have a look online or on Pinterest

I have listed the character traits below for your reference.

  • Fairness – Treating everyone in a just and accepting manner

  • Honesty – Being trustworthy, sincere and truthful

  • Empathy – Understanding how someone else feels

  • Respect – Valuing self, others and our world

  • Courage – Facing the challenge

  • Integrity – Doing what is right and honourable

  • Optimism – Choosing to be positive

  • Compassion – Showing care and consideration

  • Perseverance – Staying purposeful and committed

  • Responsibility – Being reliable and accountable
